Modular March Episode 8: Modular Appchains-As-Service With Gelato
The explosion of modular appchains is happening. Head over to Celenium, Celestia’s main block explorer, to see the chains using Celestia for modular DA. These are typically happening through RaaS providers who offer a seamless setup process. Today we are focused Gelato’s approach to modular appchains, and specifically how founder Luis sees similarities in how Web2 & Web3 scale. We learned how Web3 is drawing inspiration from the evolution of web2 infrastructure, and whereby applying the principles of modularity, we can address scaling challenges effectively. Another interesting, yet relatively experimental concept is zero gas appchains. Its a bit confusing to us how this would really work in practice, so we asked Luis about the edge cases and possibilities of spam attacks. He answered quite well. We also dove into the modular framework which Gelato provides for builders, allowing them to be selective in their modular chain design based on the specific usecase at hand. Overall, we enjoyed this presentation and hope you do as well!
Celestine Sloths, Alloyed Assets, And Hyperbitcoinization with Sunny Aggarwal
The evolution of the modular thesis doesn't go without saying Osmosis and the Cosmos ecosystem. Being the hub of liquidity for the modular ecosystem assets (TIA, DYM, OSMO), Osmosis plays an important role for the space. In today's interview with co-founder Sunny Aggarwal, we discuss the recent rise of Celestine Sloths and how features like the Skip API allows for seamless cross-chain transactions, enabling users to mint NFTs on Stargaze by swapping currencies through Osmosis in a single transaction. This is a mega leap forward in interchain fluidity and for all of those who minted Sloths, you understand. We then went onto discuss the Mad Scientists collection which has recently gained traction, (Sunny's PFP) and how the tech behind this collection works. We discussed Backbone Labs and the plan to distribute a significant portion of protocol revenues to holders, and whether or not this "real yield" is bullish. Shortly after, we discussed the proposal from Osmosis about alloyed assets. Osmosis has introduced the concept of alloyed assets, which aggregrate various tokens into a unified asset pool to manage liquidity more effectively. This approach not only mitigates risks associated with individual bridge failures but also streamlines asset management across chains, thus simplifying the user experience significantly. But, is it really the best solution? We asked Sunny about the risks associated, some edge cases, and really dug into some areas where we feel they may have fell short... Sunny stepped up to the plate and addressed our concerns as always. Finally, towards the end of the podcast we talked about the hyperbitcoinization of Cosmos with players like Babylon and others. Sunny is pretty excited about this and we talked in-depth about this new phenomenon of bringing BTC to Cosmos and other ecosystems. We really enjoyed this conversation and hope you will too! We Need To Talk About Fraud Proofs with Gabriel Coutinho of Cartesi
Rollups as we know them today are more centralized than we'd like. Basically, rollups operate using a secure multi-sig and centralized sequencer for transaction batching and ordering. This isn't good for a multitude of reasons, notably censorship resistance. We are trying to build resilient, long-lasting systems in crypto and to do this effectively these systems need to be sufficiently decentralized...or else we are at risk of nation-state intervention. Today, we focus on the critical topic of fraud proofs within rollups. Verifiability is integral to enhancing the scalability and security of Ethereum-based solutions without sacrificing the decentralized foundation which Vitalik has created for us. Security varies significantly across different rollups currently. Some are based on a permissioned set of validators, while others are advancing with permissionless algorithms that resist both delay and civil attacks. We are here to analyze these variations, particularly looking at how recent innovations, like the Kineti algorithm, utilize computation hashes and structured tournament brackets to meet these challenges head-on. The goal of our discussion is to provide a comprehensive understanding of how fraud proofs work, why they matter, and what role they play in building a more censorship resistant Ethereum. By the end of this technical session, you'll have a clearer understanding of the complexities involved in fraud proof design and where we are headed as a community to make the modular future a verifiable one. Join us as we delve into the technical depths of rollup designs. The Rollup
The Role of Operators, Slashing, and Liquid Restaking with EigenExplorer
Welcome to the 1st episode of EigenLayer Unlocked. This episode is meant to be a primer into how restaking fundamentally works, the key players in the restaking system, and why EigenLayer is leading this category today. At its core, restaking allows users to earn additional rewards by taking on slashing risks, offering a way to maximize risk-adjusted returns. EigenExplorer introduces a novel concept through operator quorums (now referred to as operator sets), which bring more granularity and customization to how services, operators, and stakers interact. These operator sets create tiers of services, allowing for more tailored, efficient staking choices that can yield vastly different outcomes depending on the strategy employed. One of the standout points in today’s discussion is the direct liquid restaking system EigenExplorer is building, designed to simplify decision-making for stakers by enabling them to delegate assets to specific services. This streamlines the process, making it easier for stakers to manage risk and rewards without diving into complex configurations. Additionally, strategy managers play a crucial role in helping stakers navigate this space, acting as market makers who optimize yield and manage risks across different services. As the market matures, data transparency and better tools for managing operator quorums will be key to improving market efficiency and ensuring everyone benefits from these innovations. As the first episode in the series, we wanted to prioritize an understanding of restaking and its core parts. Throughout the next several weeks, we will dive into the deep technical weeds of AVSs and rollups using EigenDA. Onwards and upwards. Why ZK is Perfect for Offchain Computation with Brevis
Welcome to episode #2 of EigenLayer Unlocked, for a dive into a technical exploration of something that’s set to quietly improve how developers build smarter, more scalable DeFi applications: ZK-coprocessors. The magic of ZK is being able to conduct complex off-chain computations and then verifiably attest to their validity onchain. This is the thesis for coprocessors. Brevis is introducing a solution that tackles one of the most frustrating bottlenecks for DeFi builders—limited onchain computational power. With Brevis, developers can offload complex computations to off-chain environments, keeping blockchain efficiency intact while still remaining verifiable using ZK proofs. Have you heard of the saying verifiable computation? This is what ZK enables. During today’s breakdown, we’ll explore how Brevis works hand-in-hand with EigenLayer, leveraging their AVS system for enhanced security and cost-efficiency. Brevis' ZK coprocessor also allows DeFi protocols to easily access historical onchain data, unlocking features like dynamic fee adjustments based on user trading history—amidst others. We ask Mo, where he anticipates the yield coming from, the demand for Brevis, as well as how he is thinking about slashing, slashing rules, and slashing contracts. Lets jump in.
